A Story (:
One winter, years ago, when my youngest son was getting ready to go to a Cub Scout meeting, he said mournfully,
"Whenever I go to Cub Scouts, I get a stomach ache."
"Why don't you quit?" I suggested.
A silence while all this sank in.
"I'm allowed?'' he asked.
How sad that he was suffering through something meant to be fun--and didn't realize he had choices.
Happily, that evening marked the end of his attendance at Cub Scouts.
Another winter, years later, a tutor at the Writing Center, a wonderful, energetic young woman, talked to me about her problems with stress.
She wasn't sleeping; she felt agitated and overwhelmed; worst of all, she was was finding it next to impossible to keep up with her many activities and schoolwork too. She worried that job hunting and her senior thesis would send her over the edge.
"Why don't you quit one or two of your activities?" I asked.
Again, a silence. "I can't," she said. "I would feel like a failure."
She survived her senior year, even did well. But she wasn't happy.
Even now, I feel sad thinking of her.
If she had said that every single activity was so meaningful to her that she couldn't bear to give it up, she might have convinced me that her stress was worth it.
But she was over scheduling her days simply to feel "good enough" as a human being.
If you feel too busy or too stressed, why don't you quit something? If you think you can't possibly quit anything at all, ask yourself, "Why not?"

My niece ,olivia (:
